In 34 years of racing, Eddie Delahoussaye won 6,384 races, 12th all-time, and collected purses of $195,881,170, sixth on the all-time list and is one of only four jockeys to win consecutive runnings of the Kentucky Derby aboard Gato Del Sol in 1982 and Sunny's Halo in 1983
Eddie Delahoussaye grew up in New Iberia, Louisiana, in a horse racing family. He began riding at the Fair Grounds in New Orleans as a teenager and spent his early career racing in Louisiana, Illinois and Kentucky. Delahoussaye made California his home base in 1979.
A quarter-horse jockey in his early teens, Delahoussaye began riding thoroughbreds in 1968 and 10 years later he was the top jockey in the nation with 384 wins.
His other victories in Triple Crown races came aboard Risen Star in the 1988 Preakness and aboard AP Indy in the 1992 Belmont. Delahoussaye has also won seven Breeders' Cup races with A. P. Indy.
On August 30, 2002, Delahoussaye suffered serious head and neck injuries in a fall at Del Mar. He announced his retirement in January of 2003.
